You’ve likely seen Katia Malia in commercials or on the comedy scene. Maybe you’ve seen her incredible dance videos on youtube. Or her amazing web series, Almost Asian. What you probably didn’t know was that this incredible artist grew up attending Calvary Chapel, Costa Mesa’s schools. Before she became a kick-ass artist, Katie was the dutiful, fully-committed Christian kid who followed all the rules and knew the bible completely.
Fortunately, Katie’s love of music and dance coupled with her innate curiosity, led her away from the narrow-minded fundamentalism of evangelical Christianity. But Katie left the faith long before social media offered communities and influencers centered on deconstruction. She left and has never told her story publicly. Until now.
With her comedic and artistic sensibilities firing on all cylinders, Katie goes back through her childhood and early adulthood, even experiencing an epiphany or two about the journey out of faith.
Here’s Katie opening for Margaret Cho last year.
