I know a lot of you are awaiting news of the publication of my book. I am very close to having that sorted out, but my agent and I are waiting on one more option. It’s a story I’d love to tell you all in person some day, but for now, I’ll just say we should have something to announce soon.
Episode 5! Ryan and Anthony shared their experiences taking science classes at APU and how those classes played into their deconstruction. They connect the dots between creationism and today’s anti-vax attitudes, and they point out how the ethos of the science departments is just an extension of the school’s indoctrination machine. At APU, education is second to promoting evangelical culture.
Full disclosure: I don’t mention in the podcast that the chair of the Biology dept tried to have me fired. Literally. I tell the story in the book, but you all get a sneak preview. In the podcast, I tried to present a non-biased view of the guy, except when I called him a dick. That’s on me. But he really was.
Long story short (and given fully in the book), some parents reported to him that I was “promoting the gay agenda” because I had students read a story by Gloria Naylor. And we talked about it. And it had characters who were lesbian in it. The horror. Professor Dick wrote a long email to the Dean of my school and my boss. We had a good laugh about it, but Prof Dick literally said I should be fired in his email. Despite the laughs shared between my boss and me, the admin took notice. This was one of the pieces of “evidence” used against me when it came time to fire me. I was a harm to the school in their minds.
And Professor Dick had company. I don’t know why, but my boss liked to drag me to lunch in the cafeteria, and he’d sit us at the table of the angry old white guy crew. Prof. Dick and his buddies would talk nonstop about how women were ruining the school and how diversity was a waste of time. These were some of the most esteemed profs at the school who had worked there for decades. It was horrifying. And a little funny. These small men huddled together to decry the end of the world. Dicks. All of them.
So, this episode is dedicated to them. I tried to lighten the mood after Sammie’s powerful episode. I still cry every time I hear the end of that one. Did you cry? Thanks for the continued support and I want to welcome the new subscribers here. More to come!
