APU should be pissed at the way marginalized people feel threatened and harmed by their policies and the culture of white christian nationalism they create. It should be pissed at how it treats professors, paying them amongst the lowest salaries for higher ed in Los Angeles county, not giving tenure to anyone, and overworking them. It should be pissed at how racism goes completely unchecked when students, faculty, and administration say and do racist shit.
But right now it’s just pissed at me. Well, me and the 30 million dollar hole they’re in which had them fire 40% of its full-time faculty a few weeks ago. So yeah. I’m the problem.
In a show of integrity and maturity, APU has threatened the entire School of Theology because a few of the guests on Chapel Probation have said nice things about a few professors from that department, most of whom are no longer there. Classy. Oh, and what did they threaten them with? They won’t get replacements for the profs who were just fired. As if they had any money to replace any professors of any department.
Even before APU knew about Chapel Probation, it was doing shady, stupid shit. According to the most recent program review, the English department was one of the few departments actually bringing money IN to the school. The operating costs, the number of English majors, and programs the department put on netted a profit. Very few departments could claim this. And yet, the English department suffered a higher percentage of firings than most other departments. Why? Teaching English is a “liberal” thing to do, so slash and burn.
And if APU is pissed at the first 10 episodes, it’s really going to hate the next two. Today’s episode is with Dr. Daniel White Hodge, and he brings the fire. We lay it all out with stories of racism and basic incompetence caused by racism. You gotta hear these stories to understand what we went through. Dan’s podcast, Profane Faith is also a great resource to learn more about issues with Christianity and faith.
I’m not just railing against a former employer. I’m…We are railing against a dangerous and insidious element in American culture that does not give a shit about BIPOC, LGBTQ, or any marginalized people. It only wants white supremacy and far-right politics. It wants Christian supremacy. That’s what evangelicalism is.
If you’re reading this, I appreciate you and your support. Chapel Probation and my forthcoming book are just stories. But stories can change the world.
Loving all of this
